Senior Team’s Heroic Journey

Our Senior team displayed incredible bravery and competed over the weekend.

In the women’s category, Senior athletes Faye WINSPEAR-HEWSON and Hayley RICHARDSON participated in a total of 11 events. On the men’s side, Ethan MARRON (U17), William FIRMAN (U20), Chieme OKEY (U20), Thomas MCKIE (U20), and Andrew SIMPSON (S) covered 10 events together.

A notable highlight was Andrew’s return to the competition after a significant break. He competed in Javelin, Long Jump, and Shot, marking a special moment as it had been quite some time, Andrew stopped competing in 2009 and his last event was at the British University Championships.

“Andrew said, I was pleased with the results of my events considering that I had only been training again for the last few months.”

The last match of the year will take place on August 19th at the sports village. Let’s come together on that day to support our Senior team and cheer them on. They have shown incredible dedication, and it would be fantastic to show our appreciation for their hard work.

Results will b e posted as soon as possible.

Heat and Inspiring Efforts at Churchill Fields

In a scorching day at Churchill Fields, the Senior match witnessed four competitors and four officials taking part. The relentless heat didn’t deter the four athletes who valiantly competed in a total of 16 events. The majority of the events, 13 in total, were dedicated to the talented women, while the men participated in three events.

Haley, a remarkable athlete, showcased her endurance and determination by engaging in an impressive seven events. It’s worth noting that she had already participated in two events the day before at the Masters North East Championships, where she proudly secured two Gold medals in the 100m and 200m races.

Following in Haley’s footsteps, Faye also demonstrated her versatility by successfully completing six events at the Senior match. Anthony, on the other hand, participated in two events, while William took part in one event, both showing their commitment to the club’s success.

Not only did our athletes shine on the field, but our dedicated field officials, Sharon, Robert, Richard, and Marino, also played an integral role in ensuring the smooth running of the event. They had a demanding day, as they not only supported our club’s events but also stepped in to assist other teams that lacked qualified officials for the long throws. It’s worth mentioning that Richard and Marino had already officiated at the Inter Counties event hosted at Gateshead the previous day, showcasing their unwavering dedication.

However, it is important to address a pressing concern. Our club is currently facing a shortage of timekeepers and track officials. It would be immensely beneficial to see these crucial positions filled not only at our matches but also at other league competitions. By doing so, we can guarantee the smooth and efficient execution of events, ensuring the continued success of our club in future competitions.

Season round-up, Northern Youth Development League and Senior League

Saturday saw the last league track and field match’s of 2022. The final position in the Northern Youth Development league didn’t see the promotion position we wished we could have had last year, this was due to the pandemic. This season we have lost a considerable amount of athletes that have not returned to training with our club. Saying that we will see younger athletes moving up from the u11 squads, we should have a better wide base of multi discipline athletes, this season we are have been sorely low on field athletes which showed on the team sheets and the final match tallies.

The Senior team this season has been devastated with the pandemic disrupting training and life style changes and some athletes regrettably have moved on to other  clubs, all these contributing factors have seen the Senior team relegation for the first time in many, many years. Looking at the current club squads there are athletes that will be moving up to u17, so this will fill some of the gaps of this season, however this will take a few years take time to get a much stronger team in breadth, before we again take out place in a higher Northern League division. On the horizon there are athletes becoming members of our club, that will become the core of the throwing section, which we will be built on.

The loss of athletes because of the pandemic has not been only to our club but to all sports in the uk, it effected the turn out of all clubs at the NEYDL and Senior League as well as the much loved NYSD Tuesday night matches these regrettably had to be abandoned for the rest of the current season.

There will be an opportunity for U11s to compete in our clubs Fantastic Four competition helpfully outdoors in September and indoors over the winter.

The club thanks all the athletes, coaches, managers, and official’s, that have supported both league teams this season, we look forward to showing the full potential of our club in the 2023 season.
