These awards, coming on top of the successful league competitions are a tribute to the many Athletes, Coaches, and Supporting Staff, often beavering away behind the scenes, who give up their precious time and energy to make Middlesbrough Athletics Club the success it has become. Without your support the club would not have been able to achieve the results it has this year.
Please accept my thanks and congratulations to all those who were involved in all the events of this year, without you we would not have had one of the most successful years in the clubs history.
Kevin Morris JP
Chairman.

06.08.16 senior match 4 Monkton
Saturday 6th August was quite a fitting day’s competition to complete our league fixtures and celebrate as promoted Champions.
We thought that it would be Tynedale who pushed us the most, but it turned out to be Jarrow who pushed us right to the last event with a very spirited performance. Although the lead changed hands repeatedly throughout the day it was apparent from our first event (the Hammer) that we were really going for it.
There were some memorable moments through the day, our boxer ran the Steeplechase and supplemented our field officials raking the pit for the ladies long jump, one of our hammer throwers, Martin, ran the 800m, and Bethany Brown put in an absolute Master class in her 1500m with yet another pb. The Palmers’ made it a family occasion with father and son doing the 1500m, Ben getting a pb. Lots of other performances merit a mention also, Layla was a flying machine, Myles has got to be one of the finds of the season, The Throwers just dropped one point between them, very impressive. Ali Bajwa, fresh from his silver in the Discus at the Singapore Asian Games came up from Cambridge to throw for us. There were of course many excellent performances during the day.
The more senior players lead by example and set the scene for the younger ones. We have an exceptional group of U20s who performed wonders, and a group of U17s who just excelled on the day. With a good winter’s training under their belt, we have nothing to fear in Div 2, rather we should set our sights on the play offs for Div 1.
At this point I have to say that in Div 2 we need the middle distance runners to support the club in the league, as this is how we are judged. Surely being in a higher league is worth more than going to every British Miler’s race. In the 1500m we have Beth Brown who is a shining example, but she can’t do it on her own. If all these runners had the club’s interest at heart and supported the club and Rick the club would never have been in Div 3. I share the joy with the team in getting promotion but we need the club’s athletes to rally round in ALL disciplines. It doesn’t matter who the manager is, whether it is me, Rick, or anyone else, If athletes won’t compete we are going nowhere. Please think carefully about it.
Finally Thank You to all the athletes who took part throughout the season, their coaches for getting them into such good condition, to our officials who did a great job, our supporters, and a special thanks to my pal Glynn for all his help this season.
Thank you
Brian Walsh

03.06.16 Senior league match 3 Jarrow
What a fantastic day we all had at Jarrow. One or two slight injuries and hiccups but all in a day’s athletics. We won by 40 points (SUBJECT TO SCRUTINY) and today was as marvellous display of the real meaning of Esprit de corp as you would ever experience. Encouraging and consoling.
Our Multi man through injury became an official. (nobody argued with him) and Clare Turnbull (photo) turned the clock back with a display of hurdling rarely seen. Charlie was king of the high bar again.
In short there was a whole host of outstanding performances. In fact you would pay good money elsewhere and not see as good, thank you to everyone who competed, officiated, and supported. So proud to be part of this group. DIV 2 Here we come.

19.06.16 YDL Lower Match 3 Middlesbrough
Fingernails bitten, nerves high match 3 came everyone knowing that a win here would be a massive help in our promotion dreams. From the off we knew that Hallamshire would come in force and try and take this from us and they didn’t fail to do that but we also came and we fielded a team that matched anything Hallamshire could throw at us, throughout the day anxious and nervous Team Managers, Athletes and Parents waiting for updates on scores and it was very tight on points between us and Hallamshire at some counts us leading at some them leading but it was going to come down to the final count.
The atmosphere in the stand at the end of the day was something that only being there and being part of you could appreciate pretty much a full team of Middlesbrough were there all other teams had left and we waited nervously for that final count and announcement, and it came you could hear a pin being dropped at this point ……… 2nd Place Hallamshire at that point the noise in the stand could have been heard everywhere in the stadium because we then knew we had got that very important 1st place everyone cheering so loud and jumping around we actually couldn’t hear what the final points were and it was tight 1 point between us and 2nd place but the most important 1 point ever.
I don’t feel at this point it is really fair to name anybody individually for pbs or places as every single athlete again was outstanding and every single athlete that competed deserves to be mentioned in this report as everybody gave not 100% but way beyond that. Many thanks as always from Team Managers to everyone from Athletes, Parents, Officials and Helpers in helping us get this win.
Next stop is York on 16th July 2016, this again is going to be a difficult and hard match with holidays taking a number of athletes away from the team, but already team sheets are being wrote out in preparation and athletes confirming their availability, come on Middlesbrough let’s do this let’s go to York and try and get that Fourth and final win and dare I say at this point gain promotion to Premier League !!!

Every single athlete gave 110% in their events thanks to the athletes who stepped out of their comfort zones and took part in events that’s not theirs but did so for the team which is very admirable.
Anchoring the team performances were our relay squads: U13 girls 4 x 100, 2nd place Charlotte Kelsey, Lucy Johnson, Holly Clarke, Ellie Boylan. U15 girls 4 x 100, 2nd place Amy Ruddock, Emily Hulyer, Abigail Pountain, Caitlyn Birse. U15 girls 4 x 300, 3rd place Betty Bergstrand, Scarlett Hutchinson, Olivia Moore, Eve Robson.

All of the fantastic performances from every athlete contributed to Second place on the day, a fantastic achievement and one that everybody should be very proud of. However there was a twist to the results, taking into account the officials points when the league ratified the scores we were placed 1st place, well done everyone. The next match is at Doncaster on May 21st, all eligible athletes please be available for selection so we can again field a strong team.”

Then in the most thrilling and close final of the weekend she clawed he way back from a sluggish start to overhaul Venus Morgan of Hull with her very last stride to win the gold medal in a new personal best time of 11.63 seconds the same time as Morgan.

Fantastic Four U11 inaugural meeting, 27.06.15
With no threat of rain and the sun shining brightly, 47 eager under 11s from Middlesbrough Athletic Club (Mandale) and Darlington Harriers arrived for a competition based on the UKA Quadkids competition. The children were put into 4 groups, rotating through the 4 disciplines of Long Jump, 600 m,howler and 75 m.
Yesterday saw the first ever competition for many of these youngsters with no pressures unless you count Grandma shouting in the background. It was all good fun with lots of support and encouragement from siblings, parents and other relations, some coming from as far away as Glasgow, just to see their family take part.
We had the company of Chris Tomlinson giving tips at the Long Jump area. We also had John Stacey from England Athletics, there to present the Clubmark certificate to the club.
It was a very successful day aided by many officials and committee from our club but especially we recognised the contributions and assistance from willing parents.
On the financial side, we asked the youngsters to pay the stadium entrance fee and provided them with their numbers , a bottle of water and a whole lot of fun! Middlesbrough borough Council kindly allowed us the use of the track.
We hope that the next occasion will be even bigger and better with the addition of the Council run under 11 group.
All information on the next Fantastic Four will be put on the website by Marino as soon as we have set a future date.
Charlie Myers England Under 20 Championships
Middlesbrough AC pole vault star Charlie Myers won the clubs first England National title since Chris Tomlinson’s indoor triple jump win in the year 2000.
Competing in the England Athletics under 20 Championships and European Trials, Charlie went into the competition with the qualifying height of 5.15 metres and needed to finish in first place to qualify automatically for the European Championships in Sweden this July. Charlie faced some tough opposition from World under 18 record holder Adam Hague (The Dearne ALC) and former World Youth Champion Harry Coppell (Wigan & District).
With the Charlie and Adam Hague entering the competition at a height of 4.90 metres Charlie cleared it at the first attempt and Hague at his second attempt. Charlie and Harry Coppell cleared the next height of 5.05 metres at the first attempt whilst favourite Hague failed three times and crashed out of the competition. The bar was then raised to the European qualifying height of 5.15 metres with both Charlie and Coppell needing all three of their attempts to clear the height. Due to the same number of clearances at the lower height both athletes were awarded the gold medal.
The win means that Charlie will be amongst the names automatically selected by UKA athletics on Monday to compete for Britain in the European Junior Championships in Eskilstuna, Sweden from the 16th to the 19th of July. Charlie will be Middlesbrough AC’s third junior Great Britain international in the last 12 months following on from Jack Crosby and Amy Carr in 2014.
Following his victory a clearly delighted Charlie was quick to praise his coach Chris Boundy at Gateshead College where he is presently studying A levels and his parents. He also had special praise for his local sponsor Liam Percy owner of Al Fornos Italian Restaurant in Southfield Road Middlesbrough, “without their help I wouldn’t have been able to do most of the things needed to train properly this year so I would like to thank them and my parents from the bottom of my heart”
On his aims for the European Championships a grounded Charlie said “a personal best and a place in the top 8 would be a great achievement for me this year amongst such great competition, anything else would be a bonus”

Charlie Myers Leeds Open 09.05.15
The rising star of Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) Charlie Myers had the best performance of his young life on Saturday and with it he has one foot on the plane for this year’s European under 20 Athletics Championships.
Myers was competing in the Leeds City open meeting in the senior pole vault. Going into the competition with a season’s best of 5.05 metres and a lifetime best of 5.10 metres set last year the 17 year old wasn’t expecting much in the poor and wet conditions.
Myers surpassed his wildest expectations clearing 5.15 metres to win the competition a lifetime best, and more importantly the qualifying height for the European Championships in Eskilstuna, Sweden this July.
This personal best cements Myers’s position as GB no 2 for the season behind European record holder Adam Hague and if he manages to finish in the first two positions in the trials at Bedford in June he will guarantee his place on the GB team and he will follow in the footsteps of fellow Middlesbrough AC athletes Jack Crosby and Amy Carr who became British internationals last year.

03.06.16 Senior league Jarrow

U15 girls 4 x 100, 2nd place Amy Ruddock, Emily Hulyer, Abigail Pountain, Caitlyn Birse. U15 girls 4 x 300, 3rd place Betty Bergstrand, Scarlett Hutchinson, Olivia Moore, Eve Robson.

Moving up into fifth after 800m in 2 minutes 10 seconds the Northern Inter-counties 3000 metres champion, put himself in the perfect position to challenge for a medal on the final lap. In the final 100 metres of the race Baker was still in fourth place but with a brilliant sprint finish he moved into second place behind Youth Olympic Triathlon Champion Ben Dijkstra of Leicester to take the silver medal. His time of 3 minutes 57.89 seconds was a personal best and a new Middlesbrough AC club record for the youngster, breaking the 11 year old record of international Jonathan Taylor.
Nathan Baker’s younger training partner Joshua Cowperthwaite recently winner of the Northern under 15 3000 metre championships, went in the under 15 boys 3000 metres. Cowperthwaite ran a brave race to finish just outside of the medals in fourth place in a time of 9 minutes 24.50 seconds.

Training partner Dan Nixon was just short of his lifetime best with a throw of 54.44 metres to finish in10th place. Joe Martin finished in the top 8 of the under 17 men’s discus finishing in seventh place with a distance of 43.59 metres.

North of England Youth Championships 15 – 16 August
Middlesbrough Sports Village hosted the largest athletics competition the town has seen in the last 40 years at the weekend.
The North of England Athletic Association chose the venue as the host for it’s under 17, under 15 and under 13 track and field championships. The first time Middlesbrough has been chosen to host the Northern championships since 1984 when the senior men’s competition was held with the last female championships held as far back as 1973.
Local athletes were in gold medal winning form on both days of the competition. Saturday saw two gold medal performances one in the very first and one in the last events of the day. Steven Wheater (Middlesbrough AC) improved his personal best in the under 15 boy’s long jump by almost half a metre to take gold with a leap of 5.92 metres. That jump took Steven ahead of a certain Chris Tomlinson in the clubs all time rankings. Middlesbrough’s second gold medal of the day came from Sam Byrne. Competing in the under 15 boy’s javelin Sam went into the competition with a best of 38.61 metres and with his opening throw he smashed his best by nearly seven metres to win with a throw of 45.23 metres.
Sunday’s competition saw Steven Wheater in action once again. This time the talented teen went in the high jump. Steven cleared a very impressive 1.80 metres to not take his second gold medal of the weekend but break the club record that had stood since 2010 to his training partner Patrick O’Connor. Middlesbrough only medal on the track was another Gold. This time from Joshua Cowperthwaite in the 3000 metres. Taking a lead he was not to relinquish from the start Josh imposed himself on the field winning by a margin of 6 seconds in 10 minutes 18.5 seconds. Robbie Gunn of New Marske Harriers ran well to win the bronze medal in 10 minutes 29.6 seconds.
If Gunn’s medal was not a surprise for the New Marske outfit then the performance of Amy Carter was. Unable to train for three weeks due to injury the talented athlete only made the decision to compete on the Sunday morning. Going in the 75 metre hurdles Amy qualified for her final in 11.99 seconds. Then in the most thrilling and close final of the weekend she clawed he way back from a sluggish start to overhaul Venus Morgan of Hull with her very last stride to win the gold medal in a new personal best time of 11.63 seconds the same time as Morgan.
Joe Martin (Middlesbrough AC) has been a revelation this season and in the final event of the championships went in the under 17 men’s discus. Joe threw 42.36 metres to win his first northern gold medal. Aaron Jeal (Middlesbrough AC) had to be content with the silver medal in the men’s hammer throwing his best for some weeks with 59.18 metres.
Sponsored by Active Middlesbrough, Middlesbrough & Teesside Philanthropic Foundation and South Tees NHS Foundation Trust. The competition was lauded as a resounding success by officials, competitors and spectators alike. With the 2016 version being awarded to the venue at the end of the meeting.
Medals were presented by Mayor David Budd, Executive member for sport and Leisure Lewis Young form Middlesbrough Council. From South Tees NHS Trust CEO Professor Tricia Hart and Medical Director Richard Wight and junior international athletes Tom Somers (City of York AC) and Amy Carr (Middlesbrough AC)

Amy Carr International Selections
Eaglescliffe track and field athlete Amy Carr has triple reason to celebrate this week. As well as celebrating her 16th birthday Amy has been selected to represent both Great Britain and England in international competitions later this year.
Despite having had a light training and racing schedule due to her year 11 exams, selectors have shown faith in the reigning UK Schools and Brazilian School Games 100m Champion
Amy’s first competition will be representing Great Britain at the 11 th IWAS World Junior Championships in the north east Dutch town of Stadskanaal, between the 2 nd and 8 th of July. Amy has been selected to compete in the 100 metres the event in which she won a bronze medal at in the last Championships held in Stoke Mandeville. Amy has also been picked to compete in the 200 metres and long jump. Stadskanaal was previously the host venue of the 2012 IPC European Athletics Championships.
Four weeks after the IWAS World Junior Games Amy will step up to senior level. The CPISRA World Games will take place between the 6 th to the 16 th of August at the Harvey Haddon Stadium, Nottingham. Team Cerebral Palsy England has selected Amy for the long jump where she is currently ranked 7th in the world and 2nd in the UK.
On hearing of her double selection the Egglescliffe school pupil said “I’m amazed, I really wasn’t expecting to compete at IWAS this year as I hadn’t raced much due to my exams but I’m really, really pleased”. On her CP World Games selection Amy added “this is the first time I get to represent England and to be able to compete in Nottingham so close to home makes it all the more special, I hope I also get the chance to run in the 100 metres here too”. Amy also wanted to thank her family and coach for their support and selectors Katy Jones from GB Athletics and Katie Johnson Team England for selecting her.
Paralympic Head Coach Paula Dunn said: “The IWAS World Junior Games offers a great platform for athletes to make that next step to the major senior championships. The likes of Hannah Cockroft, Mickey Bushell and Aled Davies have all won medals at this event and it has stood them in good stead in their transition to the senior GB & NI team.
“It is really encouraging to see so many athletes coming through the Paralympic pathway and I’m confident we will see some strong results in Stadskanaal this summer to follow up what was a successful IWAS World Junior Games in Stoke Mandeville last year.”
